Actually, there really is no secret on spraying candy colors. All you need to do is spray the basecoat color of your choice (most of the time this will be a metallic), then spray the candy over the basecoat color. Candy is nothing more than tinted clearcoat.

The trick it getting the candy to look even without any dark and light spots. This comes with skill and...a good gun.

I would suggest having quite a few paint jobs under your belt before trying a candy job.

I am personnaly not a really experienced painter but, I have used the HOK Kandy system. Its basically 2 coats of base and 3 coats of a kandy basecoat. I don't think they look as good as a traditional kandy paint job but, they do have some really vibrant colors that kick butt in the sun light. Also, much easier to use and it matched the paint chip as close as I could tell.

Spraying candy is really not that difficult.
Put down your base, usually a metalic.I will sometimes use a belending clear over the base
for protection.Wet sand this with 600,the shoot your candy. The trick is in figuring out the spray pattern.Only go in one direction and don't spray across or at 90 degrees to your first coats. This will give you a mottled look.Only one direction,in the case of a tank from back to front, starting at the bottom working up.With a 75% overlap, and a good gun.Hope this helps.

so, i need to go from front to back, then go from front to back over and over overlapping by 75%? or do i go back and forth like a regular paint? thanks for the help youve given.

You would paint like a regular color.
The 75% overlap is how much you move the gun so the spray pattern overlaps 75% of the previous pass. Usually it's 50% for everything else.
When spraying candy, I would suggest you tint the base color with the candy color before laying the base down. Or for instance, if doing blue candy, use a blue metallic.
This really helps to hide any uneveness in passes. Plus you will get faster coverage, but not always. Doesn't eliminate mistakes that are made, but helps from people seeing them.
Good luck,

When spraying candy,go from back to front up over the big end of the tank, then back to where you started from.In other words spray in both directions with the 75% overlap. But don't spray a 90 degrees to what you put down in your first coats

Tinting the base color?

Can you mix HOK Kandy Basecoat with a HOK Metallic Base for tinting purposes?

For the first two coats, make SURE You screw in the paint flow knob a few turns. 75%overlap puts down ALOT of paint. Your basically putting down 4 coats in one.
The idea is to get a nice even light coat first then when it tacks you can open the paint knob a little bit and it won't be nearly as likely to run.
Then for the final coats go to a 50% overlap and if you want to be real fancy, add about 25-50% more reducer (of course you'll have to readjust the paint knob and/or spray pattern and/or spray pass speed to avoid runs.
This will help it flow out for a really smooth finish.
Do this with your clear, color sand to 2000 grit and then buff and you have a show finish!

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">If you were to do this (don't think you should) you would kill the depth of the candy basecoat. I would suggest using other KBC colors to tint with or adjust metalic basecoat *under* the candy color.
