I am looking to paint some badges which come chrome from the factory. I would like to paint them black to match the car better and give them a more stealth look. can anyone give me some insight on prepping this kind of thing.
should I sand them down so that no "chrome"
remains? any help would be great thanks

if the plastic is black under the chrome try wetsanding the chrome off with 1000-1500 grit ,as it will only be thin, then give it a light hand cut to be rid of the sanding marks
Otherwise sand off all the chrome and then youll need to plastic prime them and then spray the type of black you want over that
if you want a dull type black ask the paint supplier if they have a black plastic primer and you could leave it at that.

You can also just use House of Kolor's adhesion promoter.

Stuff works great. I painted a set of chrome harley tank badges with it and then shot black sparkle pearl base coat then cleared them and they came out great. No sanding or messing up the chrome.

Hi Ken,your going to think I'm crazy for telling you tkis. But if you want to take chrome off plactics parts.Put the part in ordinary bleach,it will remove it in about 5 min.It will still have the base on it they apply for the chrome, but this can be removed with oven cleaner.Thats right I kid you not.If your not sure, which I don't blame you.Check out some of the plastic modelling sites. They have been using this process for years.BD.
