Painting fender insides and tank bottom

Hi folks. I have been monitoring this board for a number of months now, reading and learning from the wealth of info available. I have decided to have a go at doing a motorcycle paint job. I'll be doing primer/sealer/base/graphics/kandy/clear on fenders and a tank, but I can't find any information on the board that talks about what to do with the insides of fenders, and the bottom of tanks. What do you normally do on these areas, and when do you do the insides/bottom versus the outsides?

Thanks in advance for your help.

i hit the fenders with undercoating. doesn't make sence to paint the underside of a fender to me.?

Thanks Hoss. I was thinking that I'd have to do something to the bottoms in order to protect them from the elements. Is undercoat good enough to do that?

better than paint. I just use the 3m stuff in the rattle can. it hardens up and doesn't stay gooie. it is also paintable.

Just had a quick look at the 3m web site. Would it be the 3M Undercoating, PN 08881 or the 3M Underseal Undercoating, PN 08882 that you use?

Thanks.

looks like the other one is a rubberized version, and it said that it was less likly to clogg up the tip. I've no tip clogging problems with the 08881.

it did say that they were not paintable, but i'd still be willing to try it w/ the 08881 on a test piece first of course.

I decided to stick with what you're using, Hoss - the 08881. I picked some up yesterday and I'll be giving it a try in about a week. I don't think I'll even bother with trying to paint it. Black is fine for the inside of a fender IMHO. Thanks a lot for your advice.

Just thought I'd let you know that I did in fact use the 08881 and it turned out great. I first ran a 1/8" strip of masking tape around the inside edge of the fender to keep the undercoating back from the edge. I then masked the entire outside of the fender - wrapping the tape around the edge - just to make sure nothing got on it. I made sure to mask off all holes in the fender from the outside as well.

It turned out great. Thanks again for the tip.

i had some overspray w/ that stuff, and it wipes right off the clear w/ some solvent.

just incase!

Undercoating will also help down the road with bullseye chips from stones hitting underneath. I also do this whenever I get a chance to shoot a bike. I like to do this on stepside and dually truck fenders as well.

I've been happy shooting a few coats of base inside the fenders. That Limco 2k gets hard as a rock but doesn't crack. I always shoot the whole tank although the underside and tunnel rarely gets color sanded.

If they are smaller fenders, we paint the underside. If they are the larger fenders, we get the edges, and then get the underside best as possible. Try to emulate a H-D fender on the inside. If they are the 'custom' raw metal type fedners, we etch prime them, then undercoat them.

All of my customer prefer to have the edges shot with color and the rest of it done with truck bed liner spray. The liner spray works real good and it is paintable as well. Haven't had any issues with overspray from it either.
Came in a nice size rattle can for 12.00 a can.
