painting helmets.

ok, new here, im after information on spraying crash helmets.

i have been told that there is certian paint i cant use.

so, can i use normal etch primer, then any water based paint. then laquer it?

so what to use, and what not to use?

You certainly don't want to use an etch primer on a helmet.. unless your helmet it made of metal.

I just scuff the helmet with a scotchbrite pad, shoot it with a sealer, go over that with urethane basecoat, and top that with a urethane clear.

I don't know if these helmets could then be recertified, I just do them for display pieces.

I use all Sherwin-Williams automotive products. I use P30 for my sealer. It's a urethane as well and can be mixed as either a primer or a sealer, depending on the additives you use. It is available in colors, and those colors can be mixed to create other colors. That's especially nice with colors like white, yellow... even with red, you use fewer coats of your basecoat to get coverage.

For my basecoat I use Sherwin-Williams Ultra 7000, and Planet Color for custom colors (crushed glass & mirror, candies, etc.). For clear is use Sherwin-Williams CC930.
