here is how i do it.

-i get white
-blue, purple, green, or what ever candy color you want. just use one candy that you like. i personally like the purple.
-and my airbrush

1) put white in your airbrush and make the random lightning streaks. let your stream be 3/8 to 1/2 inch, and be light w/ it. you don't want it too bright of white.
2) spray your candy

3) let the candy dry and come back w/ the white on top on the lines you just put candy on. this time do some tight lines. 1/8 inch.

4) spay more candy.

5) pick out which lightning you want to be closer to you. (this is where the best part of the depth comes in) make the line 1/16 inch or so. don't do all of them just the ones you want the closest.

there are other ways to do it, and i do it differently a lot. this will get you started and you can make your own style.

good luck!

Good job Dirk!

Same basic steps we use. If you want very detailed and thin lightning, you can use an airbrush like the Micron series airbrush.

hey taz, i see those are vette engine covers. I'm in the process of painting them myself. I am however getting very ****ed about them. the clear coat is pulling back and cracking. I didn't use adheasion promoter cause i've never had a problem before.

do you use the adheasion promoter in the intercoat clear as well? i didn't clear it yet, but around the oval large hole (passenger side) it's starting to wrinkle again w/ one day of drying time w/ the sg100.

do you know whatz up?

Not for sure what would have happened.
You mentioned that you hadn't cleared them yet, but then mentioned the 'clear' was pulling back and cracking.

Did you put the interclear over the clear? Possibly it is the reducer that is biting into the clear (if you did clear).

We do use an adhesion promoter, but we do this by itselt, not with the interclear.

Hope some of this helps!

this is the second time i've painted them. the first time the clear cracked. just split like the earth in superman when lois lane was swalowed up in her car.

now i have my true fire and i sprayed some clear sg100 down and it's wrinkling up a little near that big hole on the passenger side one.

do you use any flex agent? I've never really used flex agent or adheasion promoter.

Looks great! Too bad it cracked on you.

I don't you flex agent anymore. Seems todays paints are pretty flexible...now problems with the paint on the fuel rails with the underhood heat...that's a different story!
Should probably only use them for 'show'.

figured out my crack. i used too much sg100. the hok rep said to reduce the sg100 1to1 for flames and graphix.
