painting over existing finish

Hi

I picked up a used fender and cut a section off the end apart from the bare metal edge where I cut the paint finish on the rest of the fender is fairly sound with just a few marks and surface scratches( no rust at all).

What are your thoughts on scruffing the surface, skimming with filler then priming and painting./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif

Or should I just strip the existing finish off !!

Sounds like it should be fine. As long as the original paint is is good condition, just scuff with a scotch brite pad and you can lay on the primer.
