painting ???\'s

Ok i am gonna sand my tank seal it and spray the base coat. I am trying a flame job and was wondering if i could draw directly on the base coat so as to get a good stencil. Then i will tape it and shoot the flames. Is this a good method and what type of marker or pen should i use if any? Thanks in advance

There are those far better than me here, but sometimes they are not around on weekends...

I believe most of them use tape as the way to adjust the lines... You can place and move the tape fairly well... I did use light pencil for a few details and this was on champaine colors, You can't erase it though, so it must be light..

After I got used to the tape, it was easier, and faster than drawing, and the errors were changed by moving the tape...... Mac

bsspnk,
First of all, make sure you shoot some clear on your base coat before you do any flaming, this way,if you mess up on your flames or tape job,you won't get any flame color on your base coat.(it's almost impossible to sand off your unprotected base without have it discolor when you clear it)You can sand a little on the clear but try not to bust through it.,that will depend on how many coats you put on,I would do at least two. Then, get yourself some 3M Blue 1/8 or 1/16 fineline tape.It works great for curves.Try not to pull too hard in the flame ovals though,it has a tendency to lift, just make sure you press it down real good before you spray it.If you can draw flames ,you can freehand tape them,it worked much easier for me.I would get at least 3 rolls if this is your first time. Good Luck!
