Pinstripes and shadows

OKay, so I was talking to this guy that does a lot of custom painting, and he told me that when he does his flames, he sprays the flames, shadows the overlaps, then comes back and pinstripes to lose the heavy dark line on the very edge of the shadow (like where you would have the fineline). But in prior posts I thought I read that Scott F and others were masking flames, spraying stripe color, masking 1/8" then spraying flame color. So I'm assuming after THAT, you go back and do your shadows? Only thing I can't figure out, and I can get in close enough on any of your photos to see, is how then do you soften that shadow edge if you dont stripe over that hard edge?? Sorry 'bout the long post but it's hard to explain when you type it all out.

Only reason I ask is cuz I suck at pinstriping, so I am looking for a better way to cover that hard line, or maybe I suck at airbrushing too, and should be able to spray it without leaving a hard line..

Oh well, in any case any help is appreciated, as always!
