Hey Guys. I have ordered some aftermarket mirrors from my s-10. I want to paint with them the same paint I am painting my truck with, but they are made of hard plastic. I need to know what I need to do to prep them or add to my bc/cc to make it work. Thanks

Well John Boy i would do it like this. Scuff the mirrors with a red scotch pad with a sanding soap (PPG's Scuff and Clean or equivilant). Wash with an alcahol based wash. SPray a Plastic adhesion promorer (PPG's 801 ), Spray an Epoxy based primer ( DP 40 by PPG ), then base and clear. Sorry dont mean to be pushing PPG but i have been using it for 9 years now and its pretty much the only system i know as far as prep products. All the manufacturers should have equivilants so use the System you are comfortable with.

Thank for the info. I talked to my jobber today and he said that when i spray the epoxy primer i needed to use the 401 instead of the 402 i have been using on the rest of the truck. Is this what you use? The 801 plastic adhession promoter is $40 a quart when i need only need a little bit. Can i get it in a spray can? Thanks

John , i think if my memory serves me right, the 401 is a slower activator, same thing. As far as plastic adhesion promoters there use to be a spray bomb version avalible, i am not sure of the manufacturer or price check with your jobber, they will now better whats avalible. Plastics are very sensative if not done properly it will come back and bite you in the ***

, i dont mean to scare you but just advising you. A quart will be way too much you will only use a couple of ounces.

PPG does have a spraycan version of the adhesion promoter now.I'll get you the part # tomarrow.I'm surprised about the 401 hardner. For urethane bumpers and flexible parts it's recommended and really is better for flexability, but the paint will crack about the same time the 402 will on these so I figure WTF.The advantages to the 401 catalyst is the open recoat time is 72hrs instead of 24,but you have to either give it a 30 minute induction time before use or put it on a paint shaker for 5 minutes.I wouldn't worry about this at all,but I'll dig up the adhesion promoter info for you, kind of a waste having a qt laying around if you wont use it.

).I must have lost the flyer I had for the spray can of adhesion promoter but the paint store should have it listed and if they're a big supplier should have a can or 2 around.

I fly radio-controlled helicopters and use BullDog Adhesion Promoter to paint the canopies. It comes in a purple spray can and is available from your local auto parts store. I got mine at PepBoys. About $6 a can.

I would check out www.innate.com , They carry HOK and he has some Adhesion Promoter http://www.innate.com/HOK/primers.htm in smaller quantities and you can still shoot it out of a gun. I painted my truck mirrors about a year ago and the paint is still sticking. I did use a BC/CC system. You'll probably only need 8 oz. Good luck
