The goal here is to end up with a HOK candy blue tanks with ghost flames.....

1) razor blade decals off and feather out edges

2) Prime the spots on each of side of the tank where the decals were

3) sand the rest of the tank with 600

3) sand the primer with 400, then 600.

4) spray sealer over the whole thing

5) spray the HOK gold base for the candy effect

6) make a let down flag, paint the flag gold, mask off 5 differnt sections, each section having one more coat of blue, the flag should range from 1 coat of blue to 5 coats of blue

7) choose number of coats of blue over the golf for the tank

8) spray tank how ever many coats of blue

9) mask flames

10) choose color one coat less than the one for the tank

11) spray the ghost color ( which is one coat less than whats on the tank )

12) pul off tape

13) put one coat of clear

14) Block with 600 grit

15) then put 3 more coats of clear, ill be using D893, PPG Global for this

16) sand with 1500 grit sandpaper on a DA, then use a Mirka 2000 pad, then a 3000 pad, buff out, the polish with 3M swirl mark remover and wax with Malco paste wax ( body shop safe, of course )

17) look at it becuase its pretty

Does all that sound right ? Please correct anyting that I am doing wrong.... is the let down flag the right idea ? I know thats what I do when spray tri-Coats with PPG Global, will it work with HOK Candy ?

THANKS !!!

1 FORGET THE RAZOR BLADES AND JUST DA IT

10 DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT YOU MEAN.

13 ONE COAT IS'NT ENUFF TO BLOCK SAND

15 IN MY EXPERIENCE WITH HOK IT'S AWFUL TOUCHY ABOUT MIXING WITH OTHER PRODUCTS, STICK WITH HOK CLEAR.

Most urethane systems can be mixed. I always test panel them to make sure and have only run into problems once or twice. I think it was more my fault than the paints though.

Seems like a lot of work for the paint job.

EZRIDER I had lifting problems using another clear over HOK candy urethanes. don't remember what brand it was cause it was a few years back. Just left a bad taste so I use HOK all the way through now. Could have been I missed the recoat window but I don't take that chance anymore.

Osh,

I have used the PPG clear over the HOK without any problems. Both are polyurethane bc/cc

I once had a problem with the HOK urethane candy lifting, but I am almost positive it *was* the "past the window" for cleacoating over it (good guess

).

Never again.

Make sure it "just doesn't tack up". Either now, or wait until it's completely dry (then you will have to scuff it up!).

Most of the time, I just wait until the next day )with the HOK urethanes candies) and scuff it up. I immediately pull the "outline" tape of the edges so the candy "rolls" and does not have such a sharp edge if you wait until the next day. Tedious work

Blacksnake, most of it's right on.I prefer to strip to metal if you're putting this much material on but it'll work if you don't,just my preference.Since you're doing the flames in the same color as the rest, try this. After your gold is down put a coat of intercoat clear down to protect the gold. When it's dry scuff it and mask your flames out.Looking at your letdown panel see how many coats it takes to get the main color you want, then pick the difference for the flames. For example, you like the look of 4 coats for the main color, but the difference between 2 and 4 is the amount of ghosting you want so the flames need 2 coats(which is usually very ghosted). Now spray the 2 coats on the masked out flames, untape and spray the 4 for the desired color. One benefit to this is the 4 on top of the flames mellows out the tape edge so it wont take as much to sand out of the clear. What will happen that I like is the candy will build a little at the tape line and you'll get a very fine darker line there.Looks like it's been striped on the outline very faintly but it's ghosted too.As you move the line appears and disappears. My camera won't pick it up it's so faint or I'd post a pic. There are pix of mine done this way in PPG basecoat somewhere about 3 months ago but the base candy isn't as rich as HOK's.If you don't want the line candy the whole thing then blow the flames, but build it up slowly or you'll get a line anyway.Your first clear should be 3 coats, block it out and reclear it.It should be slick now so any buffing will be mainly to knock out dust nibs.
