PPG guys,What's the non oven dry time of DP40 at say 70 ?How mant coats do you use after the washcoat over bare metal? How soon can I topcoat and what's the longest I can wait to topcoat?

I really like HOK but,PPG has so much to offer,The 24hr clear window is much better than HOK's 1hr.Since I want to paint my car in pieces,Well at least the doors removed,it will give me much more time to put the car back together before I clear it,Am I ok in thinking I will lay the topcoat put the car together and then clear the whole thing?

Hey Jim.The DP depends on the hardner used. The 201 hardner has a window of 3 days to be topcoated without sanding and the 402 has 24hrs.I've heard the newer DP40-LF is a little more but I haven't verified it.I'm a little unclear when you say topcoat it and assemble it,you mean base it then assemble it right? That will work but man is it hard to clear something that way jambs and all over base and not get runs.I find it's easier to base and clear the jambs, assemble it,scuff the jambs, base the outside and blow a little over the buggered up bolts and on the last coat of clear open the panels and blow a coat of clear on them too to cover the overspray that blew in.This is a pain too but there's no tapelines in the jambs. It is best to leave the front fenders off so you can get the front of the doors and hinge pillar without getting dry spots, the hood can be left on and tape off the underside at the seam the outer panel is rolled and crimped to the inner. The decklid is better this way too but not as bad as the hood if left on.
