PPG DX57 & Harlequinn ?

Got all the stuff to squirt some Harliquinn (color shift) flames. Read the tech sheet that came with it, which said I MUST use DX57 hardener if reducing it with DBC500 interclear and using it as a tri-coat system. (Black base, then the Harlequinn/DBC500, then clear.)

I'm not actually using it as a true tri-coat system. I'm going to be applying the Harlequinn directly over well cured clear. I've been told that the DX57 hardener is required because you end up with quite a few coats of base when sprayed the traditional way, but if I'm spraying over clear - not base - am I going to need the DX57? Can I just mix it with the DBC500, spray the flame and clear like always?

Thanks guys,

Andy

Yeah, don't worry about it Andy.PPG says that because they have to warrantee their paint and recommend anything over roughly 4 coats of base be catalized.I've gone 7 coats and cleared without problems but it isn't the ideal situation. The DBU line is great for the thicker stuff but they used to be limited on color matches and the reducer could go bad over time since it contained the hardner. If you ever do use the DX57,measure accurately as possible and favor the side of a little extra over not enough. An ounce and a half per qt gets hard to measure when you're only making up a few ounces to spray if you don't have the mixing scale to use. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbutt.gif

Rex,

Thanks a bunch. It actually solves 2 problems by not using DX57.

1. Don't have to buy and measure the stuff.
2. Can bottle up the remainder and use it down the road on my son's bike.

Outstanding! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon_wave222.gif <----- (my favorite graemlin)

Thanks again,

Andy
