After getting fed up with HOK when they got rid of UFC-40 I was down at my local jobber bitchin about my problems with HOK's New Clears when he offered me some FREE PPG Global clear - Not one to pass up anything free We went to the back and poured out a qt. of clear along with some reducer and hardener - Home I went with a smile on my face -
I was working on a bike job that already had HOK blue flake and was cleared with UFC 35 and scuffed up ready for some flames - The flames were shot with 3 coats of a custom mixed PPG DBU that my jobber and me nicknamed "baby puke metallic green" after it was shot I determined that it didn't stand out enough so I mixed up some HOK Candy Green and shot 3 coats on - as you can imagine I had a paint edge from hell - a total of 6 coats thick!! - I knew for sure that this was going to get double dipped in clear and maybe triple --
NOW comes the test of my FREE clear - (joy) --- I've always had bad luck when I get a deal on something - like it just doesn't work or will screw something else up - I was a little nervous about this when I started mixing the clear = 3:1:1 is what my jobber told me = he even wrote it on the cans so I wouldn't mix it wrong . After I figured out the right quanities I ended up with 20 oz. ready to shoot === Now the fun begins - I layed 2 tack coats very lightly 5 min. apart - (had some airbrushing that I didn't want to melt) - and then started hammering on the wet coats - I shot a total of 4 coats (not counting the tack coats) with flawless results - I still could see the edge on the flames and gave it 2 days to harden up = 2 days later I pulled out my trusty box of 600 grit paper and started to sand down the edges and prepare for another session of clear - to my amazement I sanded the edge all the way flat - I knew that this was something I couldn't do with HOK clears and was in shock that I didn't even bust through anywhere - I was in total awe of me new FREE clear and that the Clearing God's were finally smiling upon me and blessing me with such a great material!!!! - 2 days later I shot an additional 4 coats on and reduced the last coat for better flow out -- Slick as glass when it was finished.
What about the buffing Bones???
Thats what I was thinkin too!!! - I still had one more chance to F this job up and find something wrong with this product --- WRONG - after color sanding with 1500 - 2000 - I pulled out the buffer with some 3m rubbing compound and fired her up to about 1400 RPM's - this stuff buffed great - shined like the sun!!!! -- and I couldn't find anything wrong with it - well - until I had to buy it - LOL!!!!
I think I'll be using this clear for a very long time - 50% solids is what us custom painters need to cover up all that junk we put under it -- I honestly can't find anything wrong with this clear and would recommend it to everyone - and I'm not even getting endorsed by PPG - But if they wanna send me one of those nice leather jackets I might!!! LOL!!! ----- Bones!~
