Bruce,
First off, Wash them down with some good soapy water and degrease them with ppg 330 - You might want to inform your customer that they should be sealed on the inside before you start painting - If those tanks are like the ones I get, They just weld the tips on and they don't pressure check them. "better Safe than Sorry".
Take a grinder or DA to the welds and smooth them down a bit - Don't go to far!! Then take a DA or some 80 grit by hand and scratch up the rest of the tank - I put on body putty next in 2 sessions. First - lay some on and cheese grat it down to the basic contour. Second - spread on some more putty - but be nice and clean about it - Sand down with 80 grit to the shape you want - You can add some glazing putty now or you can wait til after you prime --- Make sure it's nice and smooth then reprime and go on with the paint --- Bones!~

Ya know - I have no idea what its called -- It's what me jobber sells = I think its called "tech" or "bodytech" or something like that - I used to use regular old "bondo" but was told that was just for weekend worriors -- I'll look at the can tonight and reply tomorrow -- -Bones!~

use dura glass only for the areas that will be the thickest(weld area)sand with 24-36 grit, light skim coat of "bondo" over that sand flat with 36-80 grit finally you will have to coat almost the whole thing with "mini mud/icing" sand with 80 on block/soft pad, repeat mini muding-sanding untill straight!!! lot of tedious work took me 4-6 hours good luck!!!!
