I am building a softail from scratch. I have the frame ready for primer and want to know what is the best kind to use? What kind of paint will hold up the best on a frame? I want the frame and all the sheet metal to have the same color.
Thanks for any help

After you pick the color for your sheetmetal take it to a powdercoating shop. They can match most colors and the powdercoat will be better for the frame than paint. They will also tell you what kind of prep needs to be done.
If you want to paint the process is the sameas the sheetmetal.

Powdercoat is definately more durable but if you find you will be painting it sandblast the frame and DP them. You can paint it right then or just red scotchbrite it later and shoot it with the tin.Don't bother trying to save the bearings and races in the frame, they'll get ruined.I'm a firm believer in replacing them while it's apart anyway, later on it's more work and you're without you ride.

Thanks fro the tips! I have the frame sanded to bare metal and am ready to prime I dont know what kind of primer to use. What is the diference between Etch and Epoxy primer? The local body shop supply sells dupont stuff. If I use dupont primer should I use dupont paint? What line of dupont stuff works the best? I really dont want to powder coat because the frame has some plastic filler in a few places.
Thanks again!!

I'm out of this one,I haven't touched DuPont since the late 80s.I have heard of powdercoating over molded frames but I don't know the requirements of the filler and prep.
