primer

I've got a welding helmet I'd like to paint, but was wondering if I needed to primer it first? It's plastic with a texture, and I'd like a smooth finish. should I just use acrylic paint and be done with it?

Also, should I be using a different gun to put primer on it, than the bc/cc?

And also, if I use HoK paint or whatever, if a weld spark hits the helmet, it's not going to go up in flames is it? lol dumb question, but if I didn't ask it, it'd be even dumber.

I used to weld for a living. Now I am the QC over the welders where I work. I've painted quite a few welding helmets for me and several co-workers. What I have found is that if your going to be using this hood alot, don't spend a lot of money on paint that is just going to get burnt up. Go with the rattle can. Wal-mart carries a good color selection in the model car area. Your local paint store should carry a primer just for the fiber-metal. And then clear and sand and clear and sand then clear and buff. You can still do a quality looking job and not have near the $$$ tied up in something that is surely to be scarred up.
