Primering and Painting Underside of Fenders??

when primeing fenders, i prime the under sides, 2 coats let dry for an hour or so then flip over and prime the tops. paint ing i do it like this, base the bottoms let dry flip over base the tops let dry then i blow a heavy coat of clear on the bottom flip over on the paint stand and shoot the top surfaces. you will have 2 small marks in the clear on the bottom of the fenders but it beats hanging the fenders and wresteling them as your spraying. i have not had a complaint on the 2 little marks on the underside yet. ever see the paint on the bottom of a factory harley paint job, nothing to brag about at all even their custom paint jobs.

I got rid of the other one so everything's here.On bare steel I blow an unreduced coat of DP40 and then either paint it and tape it off or I singlestage it black or white then scuff it and blow the outside color and clear around the inside when I'm painting it.My hat's off to EZ,I almost always put a mark in it somehow doing it that way.

Hello I am new to painting and I have a question for you. When painting the fenders off of a Harley, do you paint and primer the underside of them? If you do, how do you hold the fenders because the stands that Scott tells you to make hold them by the underside?? I would think you would at least need to primer the underside so it doesnt rust. Thanks a ton for your comments and information!

What about undercoating it? couldn't you do that? Would it hold up good?

You could but it's kind of cheap and cheezy. It'll end up nasty looking over time since dirt imbeds in it so easy.If you want heavy protection blow a good coat of rattle can rocker guard over it.

How about that spray on bed liner? It dries harder than undercoating and is very durable. I think the rattle cans of duplicolor bed liner are about $7.50.

That would work,it's similar.Ideally you want something that will give a fairly smooth surface without getting real thick.

Man, I thought I was the only person with the single stage paint idea on the other side of fenders!!! I go a little step further on higher end bikes and show bikes...I get a small quantity of single stage in the same hue has the base coat (for example, metallic blue base gets a solid blue coat under the fender ect.) and spray on a couple coats.

Good note...make sure to get all the packing oil cleaned off those crevices and groves on the fender! I learned the hard way.

also, I was a vendor at a local bike event to show off my custom painting. A fellow painter really ragged on me and tore up my abilities, because the bottom of my fenders weren't in the best shape (my earlier work).
I just wanted to share that experience & I learned to paint parts over all.

He was either a dick or on a trip that day, personally I'd have sat down with you if I had the time and shot the Bull.Ain't nothin wrong with SS underneath, scuff it and blow the color around it where you can see it.Like Joe said,Harley's fenders are pretty laim inside but they do have a good base primer.

Here's a trick I use on small front fenders.I use 2 car antenna masts but any kind of rod will work.Slide them through the mounting holes 1/2 way up the rods and then tape the ends together to put a bind on the fender. You can either lay it on a stand or hang it from a hook, when you want to paint it grab it by the rods to hold it and move around how you need.A 21" wheel fender and small fiberglass ones can be held easily in one hand while you spray.

Rex,i like that idea . i am gonna take that one step further if you dont mind, and permanetly attach them to one of Scotts paint stands
