just finished stripping a frame due to errors so wanna start right but will be slow going due to schedule to protect my frame from surface rust anything wrong with a good quality spray can (cost reasons) etching primer to seal bare metal and keep down rust My though- couple light coats of spray can etching primer on the metal then repair my molding and then coat entire frame with good quality 2 part primer surfacer? what is the best type to use for coverage,future coats of paint, etc, for the beginner would appreciate any suggestions i DO NOT want to stripe again thanks

BEK, you really should consider powdercoating the frame. It would only cost you around $90 - $100 and powdercoating is darn near bulletproof. I've seen guys who had a nice paint job put on and two weeks later their urethane based frame all chipped up looking like crap. You can get powdercoat in a number of colors now. Probably even get close to matching some candy colors. This is just my opinion. If you decide to go the other way ou'll have to get more advice, cause I don't know what the best way to shoot urethane on a frame is.

Forget the etch primer,most will end up rusting over time.The best thing to use is an epoxy primer.Once it's dry (or what the tech sheet says) you can do all your molding on it.When you're done just scuff the whole thing down and use a few coats of primer surfacer.

bek,

You can mold and do powdercoat. Talk to the powdercoater first, there are special compounds with metal in them which allow the whole powdercoating process to work.

You could use a spraycan primer and for now.just one wet covering coat ......then when ready to work on in future wipe it off with a wet rag of reducer or thinner (what ever you guys in USA call it}

...........Then give a frame a scuff up with 150grit dry sand paper ,then take to powdercoater...... Make sure the powdercoater is good and they get the frame really clean before they powdercoat it.
You can also paint over the powder coat with auto paint .
