Primers

Welcome to the site.It kind of depends on the system you'll use to paint it.If there's no bodywork and you're just holding ittill paint I'd DP it in PPGs system (without reducer),but you'll need to let it sit for a at least a month before it'll sand nicely without balling up in the paper.Actually the best thing to do I think is singlestage it in the closest solid color to what you want and drive it.When you're ready to paint wet sand it down without breaking through and base right over it using it as the sealer, the best sealer I think as long as it's cure out.2 coats of good paint will cost a little more than the sealer as long as you're not into expensive colors like red,but I think the end result is worth it.

Thanks for the information Rex, as to the final color yes i am planning to use red so using the base would probably be kinda expensive could i use a off white or something in that order instead of red would the final red cover ok over a lighter color. Ron

You can get the PPG DP epoxy in a red oxide color, kind of a brick red. I'm kind of doing the same as you with my truck, I never have time to work on my own vehicle so when I get a day or so to mess with it I do whatever body work I need then blow DP90 on the area (which is black) so I can
mess with it when I have time, yet let it sit if I have to.

I kind of think the red DP is the way to go now.You can put down white (or black is cheap too) but they will effect the final color without using lots of base. The white will make it brighter and the black would make it darker. Some reds are pretty transparent so I'd hate for you to have one and have to pile a ton of it on to get coverage. The red DP is the best bet or even a mix of red with a little grey in it to bring it close to a medium color, but you'd need to know someone with a mixing system for the mix. When you're ready to base it clean it good with soap and water and then clean it well with prep solvent, wetsand it with 600 or 800 and base it.This will also be an aweful lot cheaper unless you can happen across enough red singlestage in a missmix at the paint store, but the chances are slim for this.

PPG makes a nice sealer that you can sand and comes in nice colors. Look for the 2K Chromatic sealers....
