Has anyone shot some candy and let it dry overnight, lighty scuffed. Applied graphics, then cleared. I was just wondering if I can allow a candy to dry without clearcoating and apply some graphics.

Sure ya can man...I did my hot rod HOK Candy Apple Red, then applied a coat of clear over the hood to make a foundation for a flame job...laid out the flames, shot them, peeled the tape and cleared to hide the lines. The only reason I used the initial coat of clear was to provide protection for the layout...HOK makes a clear called "intercoat" for this purpose...I really did not have to use it if I had not wanted...Like you stated...scuff the candy base with 600 grit or so, do your graphics, then clear.

Is it true that you have a 24hr period that you need to clear the project or some reactions or funky stuff could happen if you clear after that?

EVERYTHING that I've ever read says to apply a coat or two of clear over kandy soon after spraying (allowing for flash time). TO NEVER scuff the kandy 'cause the scuff marks may haunt you.

To me it's not difficult at all to apply a couple coats of clear to urathane kandys. If there's not a lot of kandy left in your spray gun or you slightly clean it, load it with some clear and spray. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sunglass.gif If a very slight amount of kandy color mixes in with the clear it will never be noticed. Let things cure over night and you won't have any worries.

Kandy Kons are a totally different story and using intercoat clear on them is ok.

Without going down to the shop to get the HOK tech sheets...if my memory serves me correctly...they mention the "perfectionist method" which states that after the piece has been coated with 5-6 coats of candy...and cured for I believe 12 hrs or so...you can color sand with 600 grit, then shoot clear over it. This is aimed at flattening out any orange peel you might have. I followed these directions several years ago when I did my truck and I had no problem with scuff marks haunting me...Really made for a nice deep flat paint job...However I do agree that it is wise to shoot a coat of clear over it...then do the graphics...but I really do not feel that it is necessary. With the price of HOK candy where it is....it sure is cheap insurance if you mess something up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/luck.gif

Kel,welcome.I'm like you without the Psheet but I believe they say to clear it.You can leave or buff that but the after sanding is a flowcoat to minimize buffing if needed and to add depth.Anytime you sand candy you can get a color shift.Scuffing is cool but a good scuffing can still a chance on edges.2 coats of clear on a scooter is fairly cheap if you aren't doing any leveling of grafix.
