Question for Scott. Flame layout.

Scott. I notice when you layout your flames, you do a kind of free form on the front and rear fenders. That is to say, you make no effort to keep them equal in size or shape from one side to the other, but on the tank , you keep the size and shape of your flames equal from one side to the other till it gets down to the tail, perhaps leaving one a bit longer than the other. I was curious how you maintain euual flames from one side of the tank to the other. With your experiance, I doubt you use a stencel. I guess of course the main thing is definately experience. After laying 700+ flame jobs (including 2 flame jobs on the double flamers), you find it easier to duplicate yourself more or less going backwards on the oppisite side.

I do tend to put my index finger on the tip or oval of one side, and the same on the other side (once it's laid), then compare where the fingers lie. This is much easier than just 'eyeball' them to see if they are symetrical at where the tips and ovals are versus just looking at the tape

Thanks for the tip Scott. While I might be able to pull that off with the fenders, I think I'll try taping some friskit to one side of the tank, draw my flames out, remove the frisket and use a ponce wheel to outline the flames, then use the same frisket to chaulk both side before laying out my tape. If this doesn't work, I'll have to invest in 3M stock because I'll use so much praticing flame layout. You have a great site and I really appreciate your willingness to share knowledge............Thanks

Tried the frisket thing and went to freehand on the tank. It's taken awhile for the whole set ( 8 hrs. of taping ) but I think i'm catching on. It's hard to get the tape to "taper " just right without any bumps in the tape. There are times when I have to lift and repostion it 5-6 times to get it just right. Maybe I'm being too anal about the whole thing, but I figure the more I do, the faster I'll get.
