Question on reshaping gas tanks

i'd just be guessing that they shaped a seperate piece of metal and then cut the same shape in the tank and welded it in place
sometimes the obvious ones seem dumb but, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask remember i'm just guessing

So then I guess it's not something you can just hammer into the side of a tank. I was thinking that maybe with the right body work tools it might be possible to do something like that.

if you have at least basic welding skills go to a local bike shop, see if they have any damaged tanks that you can get ahold of to practice on. cut a template out of cardboard stock scratch the shape onto the tank then use a a rotary tool with a cutting wheel (with a very steady hand) and make your cuts after you get to this piont well all talk the rest of the way through

I'm going to say they were precut pieces welded into a cutout in the tank, but with some heat and careful hammer work and some mud it can be done.Just remember the KB (kaboom) factor.

I did forget to mention in the first post make sure the gas is cleaned out of the tank and that it's dry

I imagine those fumes would be a *blast* (sorry couldn't help it). The tank was removed and has been sitting on a shelf for around 10 years so it should be safe enough.

As for welding experience, I've got none. Though I have been wanting to learn how.

I was thinking about heating it and trying to work it in. The tank I have is a old Sporty tank that's got a big dent on the top front corner. Since I got it for free I figure it's worth a shot and no loss if I mess it up.

If you're going to try it a ballpeen and a body chisel hammer should work well. When oyu heat it up I'd use a brazing tip and get the spot red but not glowing.I'd get a spot about 1'-1 1/2" red and have the hammer in the other hand and work it,then move down your line trying to keep it going.Let us know how it works out.
