So I'm new to painting. This is my second job, I've painted my race plastics for my sportbike which came out decent for a quick job. Now I'm painting my girlfriends bike. I'm using single stage urethane metalic color and I'm now clear coating it.

When I'm applying the clear coat, it seems to dull the color a little bit, it's got a darker truer color, but it seems to lose the bright vibrant shine it had before clear.

Will sanding and buffing bring back that sparkling shine it once had? Or am I doing something wrong?

I just used I think its called Dupli Color that you can buy at Advanced Auto. 1 quart ready to spray.

I put it on pretty heavy but not too heavy to avoid runs.

is it a rattle can clear? if so, there's your problem, and it will not be resistant to chemicals (gas or whatever might come in contact w/ it)

You said it's ready to spray. Still the equal to rattle can clear. There is no catalyst to harden the clear. It will give you very little protection and very little shine.

It's the Duplicolor Paintshop System. It's designed for DIY paint projects, I don't see how it wouldnt have a hardener in it.

I did go ahead and spray the stuff down and it went on and hardened. I think it had something to do with the humidity in the air because I was painting outside. It's pretty shiny now. Not trying to be a know it all just trying to get the facts straight. I was afraid that i put something on the bike thats going to be jacked up.

is it that laquer paint that they sell? if you buff it, it should get a little glossier. the cloudiness could be some kind of reaction on the top from??? never shot the stuff before, but buffin never hurt anything (unless you burn through he he)

I believe its an enamel. Yea I'm going to give buffing a shot. You usually sand with 2000 grit and then use a cutting compound and polish?

Yep that's the stuff. I wasn't planning ok clearing the bike but saw that at the store and decided to try it. Wasn't sure how it would turn out at first so I said screw it. I used urethane for the color.

so you used a urethane basecoat or single stage paint? and you used the laquer based clearcoat?

Bcb,
I wasn't trying to be a know it all. I was just saying that if you didn't have to add anything to the clear before you sprayed, then the cleared is air dried. The clear just won't be as durable as you will want. Sorry if I ****ed you off. Good luck with the job.

The only thing i noticed is there is a spot on the tank that has clear overspray on it and it's dull looking. Will sanding and polishing take that out? Can I use a cutting compound instead of sanding, and then polish?
