Rainbo Flake in a single-stage enamel??

Today I saw a black truck that upon closer inspection had small rainbow flakes scattered all over it. Nice effect, but nothing I haven't seen before. But here's the kicker--for the life of me, The black looked like a single-stage enamel (i.e. no clearcoat). I thought that flakes were meant to be added to a clearcoat, and that a high-pigment colour like black would hide the flakes.</cr>
I don't do much work with single-stage paint, but I'm curious if anyone has seen this before.</cr>

I used a glamor flash that was made by earl shiebs? along time ago that would give that look over black. He was the only one who made it at that time. That was the only way to get black metal flake back then...

If it was a medium to bigger flake, it was probably a basecoat clearcoat black with the flake in the clearcoat. It just appeared as a single stage. Must have been a shotty paint job!? Be hard to tell it it was truely a single stage without taking a piece of sandpaper to it.

If the flake was real small, like metallic, quite a few auto manufacturers have bc/cc black metallics with the metallic in the black.
Food for thought!
