rattle can primer

I am getting ready to paint my bike for the first time. I am still purchasing some of the tools I need. Are rattle can automotive primers okay to use? I don't really want to buy an extra gun right now just to shoot primers with. I am just doing a simple basecoat-clearcoat old school flame job using 3 colors at the most. I also don't want to spend alot on primers incase I mess up the first time, but if it is a must I will but the good primers. I plan on using PPG paints.

Can't comment on the rattle can primers, but I've shot both primer and basecoats through my gun. I wouldn't think you'd need a different gun for primers, base and clears. It would be nice, but definitely not necessary. Others may have better suggestions.

If your main concern is using the same gun for primer and base then all you have to do is make sure you clean your gun out really good before starting to spray the color.
If cost is the biggest factor then I would suggest using a good primer. Most manufacturers sell spray cans of primer. Make sure the paint is compatible with your base and clear. You will probably need to do a little more wetsanding with a spray can primer also.

Your rattlecan primers will be lacquer based and not great to put over bare metal and DBU can't go over it but DBC can.Are you stripping it or going over the factory finish?

For small jobs I've used Dupli-color gray primer/filler with fine results using PPG DBC basecoats. In fact, the PPG guy told me that the Dupli-color stuff is good. They sell it in their store. I also tried the black Dupli-color, but it washed off with the PPG cleaner/degreaser! Grrrrr. Tried the gray primer/filler and it did NOT wipe off with the cleaner. Dupli-color sells gray primer (NO filler) but I don't know how well it works. Haven't used it. Others might work, too, but I figure why try others with I know that this stuff works? (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.)
