if it's a solid red or metallic basecoat or single stage it would'nt matter. If it's a candy don't bother with either . use a silver or gold base

Crazycuda,Just got done spraying torch red over med gray primer,(HOK epoxy)it doesn't get any darker but,do yourself a favor and lay at least 3 coats, you'll get an orange tint if you don't get good coverage.Dupont's color book shows it over white but,I don't think it makes a differance.

White or black will make a difference in the finished color depending on how concentrated the color is.If you want it like original grey is about always the standard sealer but white can brighten it up quite a bit.

You can make yourself a test panel by simply laying down the black on one half and white on the other. Now spray your red and see for yourself. You can go even further and lay down 2"tape (one strip for each successive coat) leaving the last spot open. Shoot your color. Remove the tape next to the painted area. Shoot your next coat and so on. You will be able to see how many coats end up looking like what. I do this with pearls, kandys and such. Once I have finished this process I tape the panel in half the opposite way and shoot clear to bring out the brilliance and depth.

This process works great to show a customer before the actual painting begins. It is also a poormans color matching!
