redoing clearcoat showing sanding marks?

Did my first candy paintjob, finished it with a clearcoat and was planning to do some graphics the next day. Just before i started with the graphics i wetsanded the clear with 800. While i did this i noticed it gives sanding marks (ofcourse) but these marks even show up if i pour water over it. With a non metallic paintjob i did earlier this wasn't the case but metallic+candy seems to be a different case.
So water isn't hiding the sandmarks does this mean the sandmarks will also show in the next layer of clear? :freak:

It's 800 for sure, not 80. :) The scratches are hardly noticable, with water over it, but they're there.

Same as above , if you have enough clear laid down . Try some 1000 or 1200 and go over it . 800 is borderline in my book , just as you are experiancing .

I agree with scapegoat. Go over it with 1000 wet to get rid of the 800 scratches.

Will use 1200 the next time. The next time? Yes, i'm screwed now, will have to do the whole paintjob over again.
I took the (motorcycle) parts outside and i noticed little metallic particles here and there. Cause: there was still some metallic in the gun, left from the basecoat. Didn't clean it enough. These particles came out while shooting candy and the clear.

OMFG! :sillyme: (learning the hard way)

Sounds like this paint job is a candy paint job with a metallic base.
You could always just live with it (can't be that bad if you don't have A LOT of metallic over the candy).
OR, resand (with 800, then 1000 or 1200) , and add a couple more coats of candy. This will turn those little silver metallics into the candy, BUT at the same time it will make the original candy slightly darker.

I agree with TAZ sand with 1000 and give it another coat of candy if its a complete job it will all match and be just a shade darker (Custom Job ) The only one that will now any difference is you. To everyone else its how its supposed to be.

It's candy tangerine and i was already on the dark side, doing more candy is no option. While sanding i went through the clear anyway, so i'm seeing lighter spots now. Will have to start over from scratch.

Okay, I wish you luck on the next try. At least you know what not to do now.
Should be good to get next time!

I found out that even p1200 doesn't hide all the scratchmarks, only p1500 does.

Btw, HOK advises the red sand pad. I can't believe they're saying this. I've tried that and imo only the grey pad (icw water) hides the scratches.

I'm surprised they are showing through the clear.
There are only a couple things I can figure you are doing wrong.
1) You are not getting all the previous scratches out before going to the next grit.
i.e, you start with 180 dry, then go to, 320, 600, then 1000, but you still see scratches. These could even be smaller 180 scratches you are seeing.

If you see ALL the scratches, then most likely it would be the 1200 scratches showing. If you see some here and there, it is probably previous grit scratches.

2) You are sanding the basecoat before applying the candy or clear.

Could be something else, but I would need to know a step by step of what you are doing.

JFYI, "P" graded sandpaper is not the same as non-p rated. For example. 1200p is not the same as 1200. I think the p rated 1200 is more like 1000. Even with this though, they shouldn't be showing through.

I don't know that (haven't cleared yet). While/after sanding i'm pooring water over it and if i see marks i assume you can see them under clearcoat too?
Anyhow, the gray sand pad icw water gives me a good result markwise so i'll stick with this for now.

Got me stumped. Don't know why such fine scratches are showing through the clear.

so didnt you start over? since you sanded through the clear? or are you just practicing to see what works for next time?
