Removing Masking

Just had a buddy paint some flames for me. He is the painter I masked the flames. For masking we used some stuff in the sign industry called Sign Strip. The masking turned out good. The question is when should we remove it? We guessed and I think we were wrong. The main color is HOK base and kandy. That was sprayed, cleared (dupont clear) and wet sanded. We masked. Then we sprayed the flames HOK base and kandy and that was cleared. We let it dry overnight and then began removing the masking. It's pretty tough to get off. I am now going to trim the masking with an exacto knife and it'll come off no big deal. BUT my question is: When should the masking be taken off? This is the first time my friend has sprayed candy and other than a stripe here or there the first time he has dealt with any graphics. We were a little weary of pulling it off while the candy was tacky because of it being stringy. We would like to know the right way next time.

Thanks

IF IM READING THIS RIGHT AND IM PROBALLY NOT THE MASKING PRIOBALLY SHOULD HAVE COME OFF BEFORE YOU CLEARED THE LAST TIME, AND YOU SHOULD OF CLEARED THE WHOLE PANEL, BUT MAYBE I MISUNDERSTOOD SOME WHERE AS TO WHAT YOU ARE PAINTING

The flames were cleared. I am pinstriping the flames so we were gonna do the final clear over everything including the pinstriping. You were correct the whole thing wasn't cleared.

We at first were going to pull the masking off after the candy (Maybe what we should have done) and were going to clear the whole thing but my friend was afraid the candy paint would be stringy. So he wanted to let it dry then pull it off.

LET THE CANDY FLASH OFF ACCORDING TO THE PAINT MANUFACTURE AND THEN REMOVE THE MASKING AND CLEAR THE ENTIRE PANEL, IF DONE RIGHT YOU CAN THEN COLORSAND JUST A LITTLE TO REMOVE THE TAPE LINE AND PINSTRIPE AND RECLEAR FOR A GREAT FINISH
