repaint acrylic enamel car

I have a 65 Falcon that I painted back in 95 with Western acrylic enamel Raven Black. It has held up good over the years but has lost alot of its super shine, along with dings dents etc. I used hardner and fish eye removed while painting it so it would flow smoother. I had stripped it to bare metal before the paint and primer was applied. Now I think I want to repaint and am not sure what route to go. I did a bc/cc on my sons Accord a few years ago with a hvlp gun and tubine and was not happy with the outcome. I shot a single stage urethane with a hvlp gun and regular compressor on my other sons truck and it came out nice. The Falcon is a cruiser for car shows so I want to have a really nice deep black that really stands out yet it is not a trailer queen. Any suggestions as to type of systems to use and the prep on the existing paint would be greatly appreciated.:patriot: I forgot to mention that my regular gun is a Devilbis JGA 502.Thanks

painting car

Well lets first start with at what stage is the car in. Bare metal,or primed. I think with what you want. If it was mine I would go with just a base coat black and clear. But remember that black will show any wave or ripple in the sheet metal. But if you get the panels really straight, which is a tremendous amount of work. That black will look just killer. Nothing like a flawless black paint job. Let us know if we can be of any further help to you.

I agree, I would also go with the bc/cc black. Not for sure why you weren't happy with the outcome of your first bc/cc job. Possibly you put the black on grainy. If you did this, then the clearcoat will also come out rough (just a guess though). I always thought that the bc/cc systems were easier to spray than the single stage (I've sprayed 1000+ of each type).

And like Brian mentioned, a good paint job is up to how straight and how well you get the body prepped, so be sure and spend time on this step!!!
:luck:

The car is still in its black acrylic enamel. I just have been wanting to get some of the dings and chips out and thought I would just go ahead and spray the whole thing over and get that fresh deep black again. R there any tricks to use with the bc/cc as opposed to the single stage? Can u put on a couple of coats of color then sand out any dust or other imperfections before u clear? Then when it is cleared I assume it would be ok to sand to remove orange peel and other dust particles. I am painting in my home shop so it is not going to be as dust free as a booth. thanks again. Hi Mike, I would prep the heck out of that thing, and do your base coat clear coat on it. Use a good two part primer on it as I wouldn't trust laying your base on the existing paint no matter how good it is or how well it's been prepped.(sanded). Since your doing this in your home shop, spent some time in cleaning the area your going to spray in. The base clear system is not hard to do,as in anything it's all in the prep. Oh ,and wear a shoot suit as most contaminants that find thier way into a paint job come off you. Just take your time on it and it will come out killer.

Brian brings up a good point. Since you are spraying over a single stage paint, you definitely want to make sure it is completely hardened. If not, the bc is more aggressive so you may end up with a wrinkle problem, which is why Brian mentioned to prime the complete car so the enamel is sealed (or strip it).

If you want the cheapest and fastest way though, just single stage it again. You can also wetsand and buff this, but you usually have to wait 3-5 days before doing so...
so there. a couple options for you.

just take your time, but as with any paint job. The prepping is the key and very important. Get it perfect and your paint will be flawless weather it's single stage or the base/clear coat. Good luck,
