Results of my test for mixing dry pearls

I mixed up approximately 1 gram per three oz of binder (or intercoat clear), then reduced it 50%, as per directions. I then set up a test panel, and masked it off in a way that I could get three sections of pearl clear on it. One coat, two coats, and three coats. I then shot two coats of clear over this to see my results.

I found that the white pearl with three coats was WAY too strong, IMO for ghost flames. Two was a little strong, but not too bad. One coat wasn't too bad, but I didn't get the coverage I liked.

What I plan on doing is another test panel with the amount of pearl I have now, but mix it with 50% more binder, add reducer, and shoot two coats to see if I get the results I want.

I think that this will give me the coverage I need without being too strong.

This was just a FYI, and I realize that one persons liking may not be the same as anothers, but comments and suggestions are welcome!

Thanks to all who contributed to get me this far! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

If you haven't redone the mix yet try adding another 1/2 part of reducer and use 2 coats, that might get it.You don't have to use 3 coats if you can get it on even with less.I prefer to use 2 coats or 1 with a quick crosscoat to keep the edge down.

Rex,
I am glad you told me that, I was beginning to think I couldn't paint well, as the one coat was blotchy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/foreheadslap.gif I was hoping two coats would get rid of it, which it did, but it was too strong.......

I realize that experimentation is the key, but I don't have the $$$ to throw around too much. That is one of the great things about this site, people can give me a starting point that might save me two or three "tests".

You were using DuPont weren't you?I should have added 2 more options. One is to slow down the reducer some to let it flow around more,if it's not mottled bad that extra flow can even it out.The last resort is add more pearl for a one coater but you could easily do the chasing game between adding clear and pearl. My first choice would be over reduce it some and use the next slower reducer to do it with,I think she'll come out for you.If by chance you're using HOK clear don't go the slower reducer route,I understand it will cause problems.
