Ripped metal and chrome effects

I've got a friend that would like me to paint his bike sometime, but of course he wants to see an example of my work in the style he wants.. He like the ripped metal look.

My question is what colors should I get to make the pulled up underside of the metal have that raw metal sheen look? Examples I've seen of that as well as some simulated chrome effects seem to use white, a shade of blue and some gray. Can any of you more experienced guys tell me what shades work well to make that realistic metal look?

Torque - I use black as the base color - This is gonna be hard to explain without pics - but follow me --

layout your rips the way you want them. I use a fairly straight edge on the bottom (the part that isn't pulled back) and then on the top I'll go about every 2 to 3 inches and then bring the break down to the bottom - think of a kings crown when your doing the top - nice sweeping half circles... - After that I pull the masking off and if the job isn't based black I'll fog some in with my airbrush. once thats done the fun part starts - Usually my rips are about 1/2 inch to an inch tall - load up the airbrush with some white - and shoot 2 rows of lines - it's ok if they get together in a few spots but basically just follow the upper and lower masked lines - I try to shoot the white about 1/4 of an inch from the top and the bottom -- next, load up some transparent blue - and fog that in - not to much - just enough to where you see it goin on -- then load white back in and tightly go back over your first lines to punch them out from the blue - and don't worry about places that still look black - they won't when you pull the masking off - -after the masking is pulled -shoot in with white your "sun bursts" on a few of the tips - figure out your light source and lightly drop shadow --- I promise you it will look great -- and it really doesn't take that long from layout to finish -- 4 bike parts take about 2-3 hours - 4 if you take a few beer breaks --- Good Luck -- Bones!~

Thanks Bones, but I'm afraid you're right about the being hard to follow. I've got a sample I can look at that's in a Auto Art magazine, but other than that they are few and far between.

Does anyone know of some pics on the web some where showing some ripped metal effect jobs? I figure if I can look a few different ones over I'll figure out what i like best and try to come up with a method to get there.

I would if I could but Scott don't like links to other sites. Instead of white and then toners and crap, try black base then cutting shreds with a silver for color then reduced black for shadows in the shreds. There's like two sites for examples that I know of right off hand but
shouldn't give then out due to their custom paint status. Sorry.

There's a miilion different ways to do shreds - I'm getting ready to do some on a bike in the next 2 weeks - I'll see if I can put t\some pics of it up - -I've tried shreds with silver / pearls and a few other techniques but the white with blue and then highlighted again with white is the closest to real life -- You can also do them with different colors of base as long as they're dark - like burgandy, violet... the drop shadows really stand out on those colors --- Good Luck which ever way you decide to go ---- Bones!~
