Roll mask questions

I received a roll of masking for laying out graphics for Christmas.

Do you guys lay out your flames with fineline and then cover them with this roll mask and cut them out, or do you lay the mask down, draw your flames on it and cut them directly out of the mask???

Just trying to figure out how to get them the same from side-to-side. I guess you could use pattern paper and a pounce, then transfer it to the mask?????

I lay out the fine line tape then I put the mask paper over the whole kit n kaboodle. I then cut through the mask paper into the fine line tape so as not to cut into the paint. I know this creates a problem trying to match patterns on both sides but if you're going to do that then a pounce is probably the way to go. It just makes me nervous having an exacto blade close to my paint. Make sure when you cut out your pattern that you run a squeege over your mask paper especially the edges so you don't get any overspray under the paper.

Does the roll mask leave sticky residue when you pull it?
I just ordered a 6" wide roll for my new project. How much tape "gummy" is going to be left behind compared to my green tape?
I bet it's going to save me quite a bit of time to lay out the flames. It's the masking off in between flames that takes forever.

kx,
I just bought and used a roll of the same mask this week. Worked great and left no residue. It was on a coat of SG-100 for about 2 days. Even though it made a lot of noise coming off, it left no residue and caused no harm to my paint.
Good Luck,

Thanks newbie...
Glad you mentioned the sg-100 cause that's what I'll be doing as well. Thanks for replying.

what brand of mask is it? Is there a particular # for it? What's it cost? Does it work just as well over basecoats as it does SG100? I use PPG DBC basecoats, BTW......

BD,I don't know what mask they're talking about but throw a coat of DBC500 over the base to protect it,pearls and metallics can be printed easily.

Mine too...came from innate. I only ordered the 6" roll and it's the biggest roll of tape I've ever seen. I'm a little intimidated...hahaha!
