Rookie painter questions

Rookie painter

I am interested in a couple of options for my bike. First let me say that I am new to this board and the paint game, so keep it simple. I have read the instructions and it seems doable.

My first option is to stay with the current black on the bike and ghost flame in silver (my son wants red tips).
Q1. I am confused by the options on paints HOC or PPG. Which is better / easier and where can I buy them on the net. Also need suggestion on what silvers I can SEE to choose from, pearls and metalics ect.

Option #2. I stopped by a local painter and he showed me a picture of a tank he did. This tank was black and silver flames but he had a texture in the silver paint. The texture was created by plastic wrap on the wet paint.
Q2. Are there instructions for this and how difficult is it?

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Dakota,
I use only HOK, but the others are good quality paints as well. I like HOK because I met Jon Kosmoski and learned about all of his products. The other companies make great paints too, but I don't know their system. You should select one system and then stay within that system for the best results.
To see what your silver choices are you need to find a dealer of your brand of choice and go look at their color charts. I found a couple sites on the net and bought my own HOK color charts. They cost me around $42 for all of their paint chips including the Kameleon color change types.
The saran wrap effect is a cool style and I don't know if anyone else makes it, but HOK makes a product called Marbelizer that you spray on and then you can put anything you want on to give it texture... Saran wrap, tin foil, sponge, your hands (in rubber gloves), ham sandwich...etc. Ok, don't try the ham sandwich...I hear people are still starving in China. There is a video out from HOK that perfectly explains how to use the Marbelizer. Also, I have found a couple sites that you can buy HOK and or other supplies. www.Innate.com sells all HOK products and the owner, Nate is really a good guy. You can call him any time with questions and he answers his email at least a few times a day. He sells in what ever quantity you want, so if you don't need a quart and all you want is 4 oz. he'll sell you 4 oz. Tell him Randall Carrothers sent you.
Also, www.autobodydepot.net is a good site for painting supplies. There are others, but these two are the best (price & service) in my opinion. Good luck and have fun!
P.S. I just shot my '97 Roadking flames last night with HOK Red to Green Kameleon Pearl Flake! They came out beautiful!

DakotaVTX,

I have not whatched the Marbleizer video from HoK but I just watched a new video by Craig Fraser (Clear coating Cheap Tricks & Special F/X). The first half was prepping and taping for flames. He also used the Marbleizer system in his example. You can get these tapes at innate.com, airbrushaction.com, coastairbrush.com….. also check out coast air brush and innate for paint (like flamethrower suggested). Hope this helps.

hey Dakota,
i just finished painting a 58 pan with half white pearl the other half silver
marbilizer on black .The stuff is wicked easy to work with and even if you have
spots that don't look right you can just spray some on a balled up piece of the
saran wrap and just kinda blot it in.I knew i shoulda taken the sandwich out first!!!LOL
But just try it on a test panel first.

I use all PPG stuff but that's because I work for them so....

The saran wrap thing is pretty easy. I use DT898 in my base for the flame and lay the wrap right over the wet flame, pull the wrap and let it dry.....then start clearing...

I use HoK mostly because of the color selection. You can get a color chart from them for around $25. Most places that carry the paints will have a chart that you can look at. Another one I have had good results with is Sherwin Williams. A friend of my works there so I get some of the extra stuff that they mixed the color wrong and cant sell it for free.

Dakota,
I have seen "faux" marble painting done on walls with the Saran Wrap technique. They but on the base coat and let dry. Apply second coat and cover with saran wrap and pull it off. Check your local "home" paint store or yellow pages for someone who does this. Maybe they could direct you with some suggestions. Good luck.
