Runs (around the edge)

I've done some Harley fenders where the lower edges of the fender has developed a "ridge". I guess it is really a run that massed up at the bottom edge of the fender. What do you guys do when this happens? Razor shave it? Try to sand it down? I have redone a candy job twice due to this problem and now I'm wondering if there is something else I could have done.

Hey Randy,
I've had the same happen to me many times. I finally learned to apply the candy coats thinner and allow a longer flash time between coats. Candy has to be cleared right away so you have the clear AND the candy wet at the same time so running a bit is bound to happen. I've found the best way is to allow longer flash times between the candy coats and also the clear coats.
FWIW - In the past I'd sand down the bulk of the ridge but don't try to get it flush with the rest of the fender cuz you're bound to sand thru, at least that's what happens to me a lot. I just try to get the bulk of that ridge down so it's not too noticeable.
Good luck,
Phil

I've always used a piece of masking tape and lifted the runs out. Don't use pressure on the tape, just kind of lay it against the run and it will lift up. Let it flash untill the clear is past the stringy point but still tacky and re-shoot. Normally, you can't even see where the run was and if you do , it sands out easly when dry.......Mo

I like to see them as a mil thickness guage. If you don't have at least one small run you don't have enough clear on it. If you have runs all over the place, well you guessed it you put on too much.
