Sanding clear before flames

I usually base coat then clear my parts. Then come back with some 1000 and sand everything before laying out my flames. Is this too fine and cause the painted flames not to stick good? Do you guys use 600 to sand before the flames? Does the clear fill all the scratches up where you didn't put flames?

got ya, I always use 800 to sand down my clear...never leaves a scratch mark. If you are un sure on corner and such, use adhesion promotor before you clearcoat again.

I use a scuff pad and just scratch it up a bit - with black base I don't even clear - just scuff it and go!! -- Bones!~

Same here,600 but on a da.Then wet scuff it to clean up the ground in sanding dust.Watch the edges though, you can break through real fast.
