Sanding clear for flames

I'm sure there's an answer to this in the archives somewhere, I just haven't been able to find it.
I've got my base-coat on and 3 coats of clear. I want to sand the clear to do some flame work. What grit do you recommend and do you use it wet or dry. ( Newbie )

Thanks for the info, Scott. Started using the 800 grit as you suggested and all is well. I'm seeing swirl marks in the clear from the sanding. You can't feel anything by hand but you can see it. Is this normal and will the swirls be visible after the final application of clear coat.
All this is probably basic stuff for the painters here but I'm a newbie as you can easily tell.

Dom't wory about the 800 scratches, they'll fill in.The DA is finer cutting than wetsanding by hand with 800.If it does happen to shrink up lightly buff it out after it's seen the sun while curing for 30 days.A quick block with 2000 and a cut and polish will go quick.
