Sanding Epoxy Primer

I need a little help.......ok maybe a lot. I'm preparing to paint a brand new Honda. Based on what I've read here, I'm going to sand down and apply an epoxy primer. I have flame decals under the clear that of course I need to get rid of. My question is, if I'm going to shoot an epoxy primer can I get away with a fairly rough sand paper? What grit do I need to use just prior to shooting the epoxy? Then after my epoxy has cured, would a 600 be acceptable to use on the epoxy prior to my base coat?
Thank you for any advice

Re: Sanding Epoxy Primer

Follow-up question, based on a recent post by Scott F in reference to factory paint "No need to prime the complete fenders.
Once all prepped and in the booth, spray a coat of sealer over the parts.

Since I'm shooting over brand new factory paint also, will this be better, or just easier.

Thank you,

Re: Sanding Epoxy Primer

If I blast it I'll epoxy it.You really don't need etch primer since the sand etches it but make sure you wipe it down good and get all the lint off first. If I have bodywork to do I let it set overnight and then do the bodywork and prime and block the bodywork, then reprime doing the whole piece. Most of the time I dry sand it with 400 on a DA and hand.If there is no bodywork I let the epoxy (DP) set for a few days in the heat and sun to get it shrinking up.Then I'll wetsand it with 600 trying not to break through.Either way I seal it,let it flash off and start painting.

Re: Sanding Epoxy Primer

It depends on whose epoxy you're using.Don't rely on PPGs DP for filling heavy sand scratches. If you aren't stripping the paint off I think I would get rid of the decals and feather out into the factory paint, them prime and level it out with primer surfacer.Sand the whole thing and paint it.If you're doing a whole new base color and grafix I'd start from metal to keep the thickness down.

Re: Sanding Epoxy Primer

Thanks Rex,
If I do blast it down to bare metal, what is your recommendation to prepare it for a urethane bc/cc.
Thanks
