Sanding marbleized base?

I want to do a project that is going to have a marbleized base with flames layed overtop. Here is my ? After I shoot my base doesn't the marbleizing technique leave high and low spots in the thickness of the coat? If I sand this to remove edges won't I loose the mrbleizing effect? Should I build up with clear then sand it down?
One more, how many coats are normal for marbleizing? Seem like only one would be used?

TIA

HOK's Marbilizer is a 1 coat application. The stuff is thinner than water and when you spray it you wait about 1-3 min. for it to tack up a bit and then apply saran wrap or whatever you want - put it on and rub it down - let it sit for a few seconds and then pull the wrap off -

You have to apply at least 2 coats of SG-100 inter clear to the marbilizer at a 50/50 mix this helps the clear stick to the marbilizer. If you want to layout flames on top of that, just scuff with a pad and layout the flames - you won't have to "sand flat" as the marbilizer isn't thick at all and you won't have an un even finish after the SG-100 is shot on -- Good luck!~ -- Bones~

Thanks Bones! Now to decide on my colors. i'm thinking a dark emerald marble with some type of maybe a burnt orange flames. Don't think I'm gonna pinstripe them.
