sanding pinstripes under clear

I have a tank and fenders with vinyl pinstripes on them under the clear. I've read the how to section and it says to just sand until you don't feel any line. Looking at the photos you can see that the pinstripes are still there, but sanded flat. Is it ok to paint over the old vinyl pinstripes? Will the new basecoat stick to it? Should I sand the vinyl all the way off. Or is there another method to get rid of them?

Sounds like you'll be ok - as long as you didn't bust through the clear -- I usually take a DA and sand em off along with the standard Harley sticker/logo because the Logo sits up a little higher - then glaze putty it - prime and base -- but If I could get away without doing that I will -- sometimes you'll think its flat until the first coat of base is on -- Then its like - -"Where the hell did that come from"!!!! -- -Bones!~

Thanks Bones. I was thinking I would just sand them off and go from there. Makes me nervous painting over them. The ones on the fenders turned out not to be under clear and I have peeled them off already. Just the tank will take a little more work, but thats ok with me. Want to make sure this turns out looking good.
