Kid came to my shop with a 32' High Boy wants a killer paint job no money will work it out etc etc. I guess this old fart fell for it again, but my question is this car was built back in the early 60's, I sanded one door down to bare metal and that paint was hard, blue, red primer, metal. The car has some mud work on it and it's not cracked or checkered and I would like to leave it there.
How would you go about preping for a primer coat and what would you use.
The final paint will be Dupont

Don't forget EZ,he's still around. The old red primer scares me,it isn't blistered?I think what I'd do is air file or block it with say 80 grit until you get just shy of metal and go to 180 until you just hit metal on the highs to finish before you prime it.If you're good with a mudhog(8") skip over it quick to knock the top off so the airfiling goes quicker. When you're in 180 prime and reblock it with good primer.Find out what he's willing to pay and and if you'll get it,doing some extra work doesn't bother me but I won't give them a job for 1/2 price or do a payment plan I think I'll get burned on.

I'm surprised the red oxide is in good shape, that stuff was notorious for sucking up moisture and blistering later on.I still cringe when I see red undercoats
