Does anybody know if I can take a stock black hetmet straight from the store. Mask out the flames, prep the flames, then paint them. Then reclear the whole helmet again.

Or do you have to scuff the whole thing repaint it black. then paint the flames on it . then finally clear coat the whole thing.

Just scuff the whole helmet, tape out and paint the flames and then clear the whole helmet. Just be sure to use something to get the tape glue off before you clear it. I would clear the flames before pulling the tape so you can scuff them before clearing.

Scratches won't show up as long as you don't use any coarser than 600 grit (but don't use any finer that 1000 grit, or you could have adheasion problems).

so after scuffin the whole helmet and painting on the flames. I cc the flames take of the tape, then cc the whole thing.
I was wondering will there be scratches in the black clearcoat or won't they show up after the clear is on, and after buffing

Make sure the surface is clean. Yhey use mold release on them and it will do some nasty things to your paint.
