sealers and primers

im using hoc sc102 chrome yellow as a basecoat my question is with urethane primer buff and standard catalyst is there a need to use sealer over it or is it ok to start your base coat.

If I understand you correctly, you *should* spray a white sealer down before you spray the yellow. All yellows including normal basecoat clearcoat yellows are very transparent. So spraying a white sealer saves alot of aggravation.

Even spraying a light gray sealer, is hard to cover. It also gives the yellow a green case to it.

really what i want to know is can i prime only instead of prime and seal, the primer is off white

What's under the primer? If it is old urethane paint or bare metal a sealer probably isn't required. If it is enamel or laquer paint then a sealer should be used. I have had problems with staining and solvent popping when spraying over them. I painted a truck once (first time using bc/cc), it was chromabase/clear in white over a primer surfacer over old paint. The white went on fine, but when I shot the clear it turned out BRITE ORANGE!!! The clear had a reaction with the old paint. I sanded it down and reshot the bc/cc and all went well as the first layer of clear acted as a sealer. On second thought, I would recomend a sealer anyway, just nice insurance.
