Sealing the inside of bike tank

Hyme,You can seal your tank anytime.I used the ever popular Kreem, available at most bike shops. It worked but,I didn't like it.It took a long time to dry and clumped up on me.POR has a product thats sounds good and I think Eastwood has something too.I think Kreem was the only product around for years so everone used it.Also I think they all use a 3 step system, rust remover, metal etch and then the final seal.Just out of curiosity,if after 10 yrs it hasn't rusted, why do you think you need to seal it?Most tanks develop rust because they sat without gas in them.

That's a good question Jim and here is my answer. I believe in fact there is some rust present because when I changed the fuel filter last year there was rust all in it. Not to mention that when I pulled it off to paint last year I rinsed the fuel out with water. Duh! I guess I should have read the message board a little more. I'm planning on painting it again this spring with a trick custom paint job. This will be the last paint job this thing will see (yeah right) and I don't want it rusting through on me.

Thanks for your reply

Well then,I guess you should probably seal it.Whatever brand you use, make sure you do it well in advance of any primer or bodywork,The prep stuff eats everything you spill it on,primer, filler, paint whatever.Take a flashlight and check to make sure you completely covered all the metal, and it's fully cured! When I did mine,(I used Kreem)it was a month before I was ready to paint, when I was all ready to paint,,I noticed I missed some spots, had to do the whole thing over and wait til it all cured, what a pain!I used the POR frame stuff and if their tank sealant is anywhere close,it should never come off.rock hard and still flexable. There's a link to thier site under"helpful Links"Good Luck with whatever brand you choose.

Por 15 is the best that I've tried, Kreem ended up peeling after about two years, Por 15 was as solid as a rock!!! Kreem ended up peeling and clogging my fuel outlet, got stranded on the way home from Laconia, won't make thaty mistake again.

Can you reseal a tank once it has been used? By sealer I mean the stuff you seal the interior of a tank when it is brand new. I've got a tank that is 10 years old and I would like to reseal the interior to protect it from any rust, etc. Any ideas on how to prep and seal it would be greatly appreciated.

Anybody use "Red Kote" as a tank sealer?

This was recommended from a shop that seals all their gas tanks with the Red Kote.

I had a local shop seal my tanks with the red-kote and it is awesome stuff. It takes a while to fully cure but once it sets up it's tough as nails. They have a sample piece to show it off, to their customers. The guy at the shop beat it with a hammer and scuffed it with a wire brush to demonstrate how durable it is.

It does use a ton of MEK so the fumes can be pretty strong while it's curing
