Can anybody tell me what process is invold in shaving the rivets off motorcycle fenders? ( What type of welding equip. What is used to cut the rivets off with ). Besides looking good, it seems like it would make the buffing process a whole lot easier......Thanks
They make a rivet shaver that is usually used in the aircraft industry for shaving down the rivets to make the fuselage more aerodynamic. They are pretty spendy (usually around $400-$500). Search "rivet shaver" on Google to see a picture.
I use a milwaukee die grinder with the guard removed and an 80 grit flapper disc. You must be careful doing this however, because if you slip, you can do some pretty serious damage to the fender. When you feather down the rivets, stop just short of completely removing them and use a good catalyzed filler to smooth out the fender. It works for me every time.
Thanks Randy!
Do you use a "die grinder" or angle grinder? Also what are you using to weld the brackets. Seems like arch would be too hot. How about gas with brass welding rod?

I use a wire feed mig welder and acually weld the brace to the fender on the botton side. Then gind the head off the rivit and remove the rivit completely. Then weld the hole where the rivit was.

Hey Austin. Thanks for the info. I'll have to look around for a used mig welder I guess. Do you just use spot welds, or go around the whole bracket?............Mo
I use a cutoff tool with the 1/4" wide grinding wheel. Grind rivits flush with fender, mig fender to remaining rivit piece, tack weld on inside of fender also.If you don't weld it solid the vibration's from the bike will eventually crack the filler There is no way in Hell you can do this without some sort of body filler work.
Mowe,Even if you took it to a welding shop, they could tack weld with an arc welder if they didn't have a mig or tig,Just don't do it if you can't get em welded, like Osh said, filler will not hold and it will crack,Jim
Thanks Everyone.
This has given me some great insight on shaving rivets. It seems like shaving the rivet flush with the fender is the way to go so the filler has some rivet surface to sit on, eliminating the possibility of the filler coming loose.....Thanks again.........Mo
