should I clear?

A friend and I are attempting to flame my custom chopper. We used House of Kolor (Lime Gold Kandy) as the base, and now we are wanting to flame the sheetmetal. We are wanting to marbelize the flames, but this stuff seems fickle. My questions are theses:

Should I Clearcoat everything?
Is it a bad idea to overlap the flames? (I have been trying on a practice fender, but I keep either cutting into the paint while cutting the tape out of the crossing, or gouging it when I try to remove the tape).
Is the 1/4" plastic blue 3M tape I am using the best stuff to layout the flames with?
Is it a bad idea to try to pinstripe the flames if your a virgin to the art?

Thanks everyone. This is a helpful site, no doubt.

I'll take a stab at this...
I would definately clear between everything. I feel it gives me a little bit of a safety net in case I mess something up. I'll be using The SG-100 intercoat clear on my next project but traditionaly I'll use regular clear in between the artwork and the base color. At least this way, I can sand the mistake off without hurting the base below.
You can use the 1/4" blue 3M tape but it's really easier (my opinion) to go with the smaller 1/8" blue 3M. It works really well for laying tight flames. It'll stay flat with very minimal pullback. Although I have had the solvent in my paint start to mess with the adhesives in the tape.
Good luck. Hope that was a little helpful. Maybe someone else can tell you about marbelizing.
