Single stage paint

Hello,

I have recently used a single stage 2K paint for painting engine parts etc.. it works fine for this sort of work.

It seems unprotected but shiny nevertheless.

I am about to paint the car, and am not real keen on this single stage stuff for panels (it must not be durable right - no clear coat??).

Im thinking of going back to the PPG guy and asking them to mix some up in a 2 stage system.

If they mixed up the colour in a single stage, should there be any reason why they cannot reproduce this in a 2 stage system?

lastly... Can i use 2K paint wihout "baking" it in an oven.

Any tips very much appreciated.

Cheers

Actually I think a single stage is more durable than bc/cc...... I just painted a set of tanks with a single stage and then scratched it up and added a clear on top of that.. came out great...

just my $.02

Single stage w/clear over it is the most durable because they are practically the same structure so they bond together, basecoat is the weak link in any paint system, you can strengthen the bond though, by adding up to 10% clear hardener in the basecoat so it bonds better, also gives it longer recoatability time for the clear!

Also, single stage without clear has the most problems with these colors: White, yellows over time, red fades, and black cracks.

interesting....

looks like clearing over the top of the single stage may be ok in this case.

I am two toning with a clear over base (2 stage) so this should be fine.

i will scuff it using 800 - 1000 grit.
