Smoked chrome

Has anyone created a smoked chrome look? I am looking to fade a large piece of chrome from black to smoked chrome without damaging the chrome finish.

I would think you could do this with normal reduced black, then when you start your fade, over reduce the black. This way it's transparent so you can see through it and see the chrome. The over-reduced black will also make a nicer fade.
