What is reacting w/ my clear coat? It's making a jelly like substance that is spit out of my gun like snot.

I clean my gun out w/ laquer(sp) thinner, does the left over laquer react w/ the urethane(SP) clear? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Did you mix two products?

Sounds like the clear was already starting to harden.

Possibly you used a "spot" clear which is made to harden very quickly.

since i am new to this i wanted to practice w/ some cheep stuff. i bought an old gallon of sun clear acrylic urethane. The guy gave it to me for 10 dollars. it says 7/1992 on the jug and i got some spot activator, it is a little clumpy, but i srain it. It might just be too old?

I don't know what to use w/ what. I have no prior knowledge, i'm just in the experimentation mode. I just bought some western refinishers select. RS6020 and hardner RS 9820. I have a friend who is also a novice and it lays down real nice and is very reflective.
If you have some easy tips of what to, and not to mix (paints/clears) w/ what i would be happy. also, what is orange peel? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Never heard of western but, read the mixing directions and measure carefully, don't guess. If your friend can spray it pretty well,go watch him or have him give you a hand the first time you spray it.Orange peel is the bumpy surface(like an orange)that you can see if you look at it in an angle.Very common and can be sanded out with 1200-2000 grit paper after it sets for 24hrs.then it needs to be buffed to a luster again.Or if the peel isn't bad, leave it alone.Stay with one brand of paint and clear and follow thier directions faithfully.

Yea, looks like a combination of things. You can go to a local auto body supply store and pick up a clear kit with will included the clear and the catalyst. Omni is a fairly inexpensive paint line. There are others out there as well.

Orange peel is what you see in the reflection of most paint jobs after they are sprayed. It kind of resembles the skin on an orange. The "flatter" the surface, the less the orange peel. Wetsanding, buffing and polishing can take care of this if done properly.

I remember the ole' Western line. They had a blue pearl that I had really liked. I sprayed my '56 F100 in that color.
That system was an acrylic enamel. Just like RM Supermax!

the clear wasn't reacting w/ the thinner. It was trying to harden too soon. It is old crap, i'm gonna toss it.

Just tried my new western clear. laid great w/ just a little orange peal. What reducer do i need so that i can get rid of the orange peal?

I clear coated a sign for my home town's city shop w/ the western. I put some flames in it and free handed the letters. It turned out pretty good. I'm pleased any way,and they will be to, b/c i painted it for free. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohwell.gif
