Ok - need some good advice here.
I've been custom painting bikes, helmets... for the past 5 years on the side. Art has always been in my blood, my father was an Illustrator, although I think most I've my work isn't that original everyone whom I've painted for or has seen my work says nothing but good things about it.... So the big question is: When is a good time to start doing this full time?? I have plenty of motavation and some extra cash to help out in a pinch. I'm building a new house on some acreage with plans to build a detatched garage with a dedicated section for a spray booth. I currently am a part owner of a small quick print shop and have access to printing equipment for advertising and knowledge of marketing..... I'm in the stages of designing my web site and I have a fairly good relationship with at least 7 bike and Harley shops in the area. So far I've been doing this for extra cash or chrome parts for my scooter, not really looking for work, more like having people find me... So what are the "ups & Downs" of this business in a full time arrangement? What type of "business" tips would you give? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanx!~ Bones!~

Bones, Sounds like you are well on your way. I have "no" H-D dealerships...well, I did just get my first job from one. But I am absolutely slammed with work, in fact, if you look at the board behind Jody. I have two big ones filled and the small one filled. Most came in within the past month or so.

I decided to just "go-for-it", this was only after doing some jobs on the side at my former work. I opened last March, and has been non-stop since.

Ups... lot's of pride (and a few bucks

)!!!!
Downs--*Lot's* of hours. Looking to hire another guy. Any prep guys out there local (St. Pete, Clearwater area)
Tip: Choose a shop that you can grow into.

Like I said, looks like you got a good foundation for a good start. If the local H-D dealers can supply you enough to keep you busy for a while until you get your name out there, you should be doing all right!

Good Luck to you!

Thanx for your advice and comments Scott. I guess it's just the "big Leap" thats a little scary. I've always been a motivated guy with plenty of resources for advertising and such. I bought a 2 bike trailer last summer and was thinking of painting it up and going to a few of the local shows to help promote myself. The down part for me is the prepping and sometimes finishing. I would much rather consentrate on the "art" itself, but I'm a "control-Freak" when it comes to my finished jobs. I had a guy that used to help me,but his prepping and finishing weren't up to my standards. I was wondering how much business you get from the internet. You said you opened last March, and it seems your quit busy almost a year later - what type of advertising are you doing??... Thanx Again - Bones!~
