Spray Mask - is it easy to use for tape layouts?

Hi Scott - great site. I've just joined this evening, and am real impressed.

I'm about to spray a set of Harley tanks with a silver marblizer base and then two layers of (shadowed) flames on top, both in kameleon paints (Green/purple and cyan/blue). I've only done single layers of flames before, so I'm keen to succeed with two layers (might try and overlap them too). I've heard about spray mask and wonder if it's the stuff to use to help me get the right layout for my second layer of flames? I'm told you can see through the fluid mask as it's transparent, so you can tape a flame layout over it and cut it out...?

But how do you cut spray mask with an Xacto knife without cutting the paint below? I've never understood this. Also, as spray mask is washed off with water, I assume it dissolves pretty quick if it comes into contact with wax and grease remover, right? If so, how do you clean the flame areas revealed once the spray mask is cut away? Many thanks Scott,
John C.

PS: A tip on how to shadow flames would be real helpful (let me know if I've missed it!) ajr.carver@virgin.net
